Job Description: Produce Clerk
Position Title: Produce Clerk
Reports to: Store Manager, Produce Manager, or Produce Supervisor

Summary:
The Produce Clerk is responsible for ensuring the produce department is well-stocked, clean, and organized, while providing excellent customer service. This role involves handling, preparing, and merchandising fresh fruits and vegetables, maintaining product quality, and assisting with inventory management. The Produce Clerk is expected to follow food safety guidelines, adhere to company policies, and contribute to a positive, team-oriented environment.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Customer Service:
  • Deliver outstanding customer service by assisting customers with produce selections, answering inquiries, and providing information on products.
  • Accurately process customer transactions using POS systems, ensuring the correct use of PLU numbers for produce items.
  • Engage in suggestive selling by offering complementary products and sharing knowledge about produce handling and preparation.
  • Address customers politely, using "please," "thank you," and their first name when possible.
2. Stocking and Product Management:
  • Restock produce displays, ensuring that fruits and vegetables are fresh, properly rotated, and attractively presented.
  • Monitor product levels on displays and replenish stock as needed to maintain a full and fresh selection.
  • Assist in conducting inventory counts, reporting discrepancies to the Produce Manager or Supervisor.
  • Remove and properly dispose of expired, damaged, or spoiled produce to maintain department quality standards.
  • Maintain accurate pricing on produce items, ensuring price tags are up-to-date and visible to customers.
3. Maintenance and Cleanliness:
  • Follow daily cleaning schedules and complete assigned tasks to ensure the produce department is clean and organized.
  • Clean and sanitize work areas, display cases, and storage areas regularly to comply with food safety standards.
  • Ensure that floors, aisles, and displays are free of debris and hazards, promoting a safe shopping environment.
4. Food Safety:
  • Adhere to all food safety guidelines when handling, preparing, and storing produce items, including proper washing, trimming, and packaging procedures.
  • Monitor produce temperatures and storage conditions to ensure product freshness and safety.
  • Report any food safety concerns or violations to the Produce Manager or Supervisor immediately.
5. Loss Prevention:
  • Monitor product handling to minimize waste, damage, and shrinkage in the produce department.
  • Report any cases of theft, whether internal (employee) or external (customer), to the Produce Manager or Supervisor.
  • Adhere to cash handling procedures and ensure the security of cash and the work area when processing transactions.
6. General Responsibilities:
  • Follow company uniform and hygiene standards consistently.
  • Promote teamwork by actively sharing the workload with fellow team members.
  • Perform other related duties and tasks as requested by the Produce Manager or Supervisor.
